Police in Mbarara are holding Twinomujuni Robert, the driver of an Ibabu Bus Company vehicle, registration number UAQ 578Q, after he was intercepted at Biharwe Checkpoint and tested for alcohol.

Police said Twinomujuni underwent a breathalyser test and was found to have alcohol in his system. He was subsequently detained and is expected to appear in court to face the relevant charges.

Police have warned drivers of public service vehicles that road safety checks are ongoing across the country, with checkpoints equipped with breathalysers to test drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police said driving passengers while under the influence of alcohol puts the lives of motorists, passengers and other road users at risk, and urged drivers to avoid drinking and driving.
