Botswana is planning to increase mining exploration as the country seeks to diversify its economy beyond diamonds.
Diamonds currently account for about 80% of Botswana’s foreign exchange earnings and nearly one third of government revenue. However, revenues have been declining amid weakening global demand and the growing presence of synthetic diamonds in the market.
Minerals Minister Bogolo Kenewendo said nearly 70% of Botswana’s land remains unexplored for minerals. The government is therefore planning to establish a state owned exploration company that will focus on identifying new mineral resources.
