By correspondent,
In late 1980s no one could imagine the influence of Bongo Hip hop just a decade later, with American style and modern beats Hip hop was negatively viewed by the aged people, it was nothing to them but moral decay.
In early 1990s there were Hip hop crews such as Mr II Sugu,Hard Blasters( Nigga Jay, Fanani and Big Willy), Kwanza Unit and Diplomats( Balozi, Soggy Doggy and Saigon) just to mention few.
The music evolved fastly in mid 1990 to the extent of being accepted by aged group, special thanks should go to Professor Jay for his songs “Chemsha bongo and Bongo Dar es salaam” which swept across the media and received much attention among the young generation.
Up to 2000s it was clear that of all modern music styles in the country Hip hop was unique not just in beats but message given, Bongo Hip hop grew up to become the voice of voiceless.
In 2010 , the all time icon of Bongo Hip hop Sugu campaigned against pseudo-politics, under CHADEMA party Sugu was able to defeat CCM’S candidate in parliamentary election for Mbeya Urban constituency. Sugu was strong enough to use Hip hop to convey the message to voters.
Again in 2015, another Hip hop legend Professor Jay won parliamentary seat for Mikumi constituency, just like Sugu, under the same part CHADEMA, Professor Jay was able to use Hip hop to send a clear message to the voters . What’s your position in this? Mine is, Hip hop works against pseudo-politics, it’s a revolutionary tool!
