Police in Kakiri are holding a boda-boda rider identified as Allan Musisi after he was intercepted transporting nine children on a single motorcycle, in a case that has raised concerns about road safety and child welfare.
Musisi, who was riding motorcycle registration number UEA 067F, was arrested during a routine operation by traffic officers. He has since been charged and is currently detained at Kakiri Police Station pending court proceedings.
According to police, all nine children were from one family and had reportedly been handed over to the rider by their parent for transportation. Authorities say the act posed a serious risk to the lives of the children, given the dangers associated with overloading motorcycles.
Traffic regulations in Uganda prohibit carrying more than one passenger on a motorcycle, with exceptions only for specific cases such as carrying a child with an adult rider under controlled conditions. Police say transporting multiple passengers, especially children, significantly increases the likelihood of fatal accidents.
Police have urged parents and guardians to prioritise the safety of children and avoid entrusting them to unsafe means of transport, warning that such actions could have serious legal and life threatening consequences.
