The Blackberry Messenger (BBM) app is to be offered as a download to run on rival platforms. Blackberry said it would initially offer texts, photo messages and group sharing functions on devices running Google's Android and Apple's iOS operating systems from "the summer".

It added it planned to roll out screen sharing, voice and video calls - all without charge - later in the year. The move could prove disruptive to Skype, Whatsapp and other rivals.

However, with reports that Whatsapp could shortly add voice calls and that Google has been working on its own unified messaging service, Blackberry may find competition in the market is about to intensify.

BBC News - Blackberry expands BBM chat app to Android and iOS

Come summer, BlackBerry will release BBM as a standalone app. Initially, it will be targeted at Apple's iOS 6 and Android Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) and above, and will provide a basic feature set. But CEO Thorsten Heins said the company intends to flesh it out further in the months that follow.
"We're committed to making the BBM experience on other platforms as fully featured as we can," Heins said. "We'll start with messaging and groups, but we'll add voice and screen share later on. … BB10 is such a strong platform that we are confident it can become an independent messaging solution."
Do u think it's a wise move for blackberry ?? I think they're digging their own grave, since bbm is the only thing that lures most of the pple into buying their phones.

It's a great opportunity, huwezi kujua what are you missing mpaka utumie.

If they make BBM available to android platform, they would have dig their own grave for handset market. I think most of the blackberry loyalist were driven by the BBM, if iis going to be available in androids Google play, why would someone need a blackberry??? Thorsten needs to think of joining the droid market.

Whataps ilishawapoteza sasa wanaangalia jinsi ya kurudi tena lakini bado whataps itaendelea kuwapoteza kwa sababu yeye anaplatform nyingi anazosupport uki compare na za bbm

The real difference can be seen when u use both the messenger on same plateform so here is my xperience while using the Whatsapp and BBM on newly launched Blackberry Z10.While this native app works very well, whatsApp lacks many of the features that BBM now has, including BBM voice and BBM video with screen share.BBM is also much more visually appealing with larger profile pictures and a grid view of ur contacts display pictures.
NOTE:WhatsApp is crossplatform(inakubali kwa simu tofauti na Blackberry)and BBM is not. Also I think it is fair to conclude that BBM is way ahead of WhatsApp in that sense.#My Opinion

u forgot, with bbm you can transfer any type of file between users, while on what's up it does don't accommodate file transfer other than pictures, video and voice notes only, have you ever observed that?

try transferring a pdf or word doc on whatsapp if you can? On BBM of course you can
