Paul Parker: Leaving Luis Suarez off the Ballon d'Or shortlist is a complete farce - and makes FIFA look ridiculous again
The decision to leave Luis Suarez off the shortlist for the FIFA Ballon d’Or is nothing less than a complete farce. It’s totally unfair and ridiculous. You have to back him and judge him as a footballer. You have to. FIFA have made themselves look very stupid. I had to look at the list twice just to make sure I hadn’t missed his name.

FIFA’s secrecy means we are unlikely to get an answer about why Suarez was not included on the 23-man shortlist, but the reason is blatantly obvious: it’s another punishment for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup finals.

There’s no other way to explain it. Not when players like Eden Hazard and Yaya Toure have made it, despite losing out to Suarez in all the individual awards in England last season. That’s Luis Suarez the European Golden Boot winner, of course, who Barcelona obviously rate pretty highly given they paid around £70m to sign him this summer. His exclusion makes absolutely no sense at all.

If Suarez was on the shortlist he would get plenty of votes because he deserves them. He has got every right to compete with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi and I can’t think of anyone else who would possibly have a chance of doing so. Only Suarez.

Instead he has been punished again for his behaviour at the World Cup. He’s already served his lengthy ban which prevented him from even being with his team-mates, and now FIFA are imposing another, retrospective, punishment by seemingly deciding he isn’t eligible for the Ballon d’Or despite what he achieved in the first half of the year, even before his ban.

Unless he goes and murders someone, you have to judge him on what he does as a footballer. If we are judging players by what happens off the park then there would be a few players in the Premier League who wouldn’t be playing the game. But it’s all about what happens on the pitch, and Suarez’s football contribution in England last season was enormous. It isn’t just the goals he scored, it’s how he played as well.

As much as everyone loves Messi’s wonderful skill and Ronaldo’s goals, Suarez gives you something completely different. He defends from the front and works tirelessly for his team, as well as scoring at a prolific rate. Look how many times he won the ball back for Liverpool last season, and he gets so many assists.

This year’s Ballon d’Or will always be remembered for leaving off Suarez now. It’s the big talking point and everyone will be debating it. I bet they will be furious in Uruguay, and it also denies Liverpool recognition for their brilliant campaign last season. Brendan Rodgers is denied recognition for all the hard work he did with the player. There are a lot of people missing out.

The people in FIFA have got no right to be judgemental about anything. They’ve got someone at the helm in Sepp Blatter who has made a complete mess of this sport; they’ve got themselves into the most outrageous farce over the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. And they want to make Suarez a pariah? It’s insane.

Now you’ve got Blatter wanting to re-apply for a fifth term as FIFA president. People will vote for him, even if they don’t like him, because it’s the easy option: it means they will be comfortable in their positions and keep their cushy salaries. But people should be emailing him and calling him to say, ‘we will not be voting for you’. Take his name off the ballot.

It is totally wrong, what FIFA have done. It’s another black mark against their name.

Sixteen of the 23 players all come from three teams: Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid. How many games do the people deciding this shortlist actually watch? Are they just turning up at the Allianz, Arena, Camp Nou and the Bernabeu for a nice meal and cushy seats and photos with the star players?

Anyone can watch the big clubs and pick out the star names. The really good people get their hands dirty, look at the smaller teams and find the players who are really in form. My son could have picked the list FIFA came up with, or picked his own and done a better job.
