Dar es Salaam. Development of the Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is progressing well, the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) has said.

The director general of EPZA, Dr Adelhelm Meru, told journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday that compensation over the land to people living in the 9000-hectare area earmarked for the projects has started and assured people that the process will go on smoothly as planned.

“We have succeeded to compensate people owning 1,500 out of the 9,000 hectares and we will continue compensating others as the government’s budgets allow,” he said.

He said implementation of the development of Bagamoyo zone will be done in two phases, whereby the first phase with a total of 2,500 hectares will be done by the government of China through China Merchants Holdings International Limited.

Once completed, the Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone is expected to become a centre of business and industries for value addition of Tanzanian products, thus facilitating the country’s economic growth and sustainable development.

“Bagamoyo will be an industrialised modern town providing employment and business opportunities, thus speeding up the country’s development,” he said.

Dr Meru said that industries are fundamental for development of any country because it creates employment opportunities which help to boost the economic sector.

“The company will construct a modern port in the 800 hectares and the remaining 1,700 hectares for other development projects around the same area,”
