Uganda has taken a step toward strengthening athlete health and preparedness ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with the launch of a specialised Sports Cardiology Unit at the Uganda Heart Institute.
The new unit, located within the institute’s outpatient diagnostic wing, is designed to provide targeted cardiovascular care for athletes, addressing both preventive screening and treatment of heart related conditions associated with high-performance sports.
Developed in partnership with the Egyptian Heart Association, the initiative reflects growing recognition of the importance of sports medicine in safeguarding athletes’ health, particularly as Uganda prepares to co-host AFCON 2027.

Officials say the unit will focus on early detection of cardiac risks, routine screening for professional and amateur athletes, and specialised care for those with existing heart conditions. This is expected to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac events, which, though rare, have been documented in competitive sports globally.
With AFCON 2027 around the corner, the facility is expected to play a critical role in ensuring that athletes competing in Uganda meet international health standards while promoting long term cardiovascular wellness in the country’s sporting community.
