Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara has ordered the arrest of a Mitoma Hospital ambulance driver accused of demanding UGX400,000 from a patient to transport them to hospital.

The arrest was made during Barugahara’s ongoing countrywide anti-corruption tour, where he has been inspecting public service delivery and acting on reported cases of abuse and extortion.

The crackdown is part of the wider “Term No Sleep” campaign under President Yoweri Museveni and CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, targeting corruption and poor service delivery across the country.

Ugandans have continued to complain about the poor services offered by some public ambulances, with many questioning why patients are asked to pay large sums for emergency transport. Some have assumed that government ambulances are already facilitated, including for fuel and other operational costs.

This incident has therefore renewed questions over who is responsible for ambulance costs and whether government is doing enough to ensure emergency transport services are accessible to those who need them most.
