Danger is all around us all of the time. Freak accidents are rare, but people have been killed unexpectedly by lighting strikes, flash floods, and even sinkholes! Then there are the internal dangers, like a heart defect that could kill someone in an instant, or perhaps a brain aneurism. There really is no way for us to avoid some of life’s hazards, but we can always do what actually is under our control to minimize or eliminate many dangers. Staying clear of the world’s most dangerous cities would be a very good idea if you want to live a long life.
1. Aleppo, Syria

The entire world is aware of the political situation in Syria as competing forces fight for control of land and the people who live on it. Many residents of Aleppo have adopted lives as refugees, and have fled over the border into neighboring Turkey as conditions continue to worsen. In addition to the fighting, daily life is also complicated by lack of basic needs such as power and water, which is routinely disrupted or cut off completely.
2. San Pedro Sula, Honduras

There’s no doubt that Honduras offers visitors spectacular scenery and tropical tranquility, with the exception of certain locations that should be considered off-limits. Crime runs rampant in San Pedro Sula, and tourists are often the victims of kidnappings and other financially-motivated crimes that often come to a very sad and gruesome end. San Pedro Sula has the unfortunate distinction of being the murder capital of the entire world.

The death of President Hugo Chavez in 2013 seems to have resulted in more unrest in this capital city. Citizens regularly take to the streets in massive protests that often end in violence and death. Along with the protests, crime and inflation seem to be out of control, and the government has not yet demonstrated any ability to improve the situation.

Cape Town had enjoyed decreasing rates of violent crime for nearly a decade, but that era of relative peace seems to be coming to an end. Not surprisingly, drug-related crime has seen a sharp uptick, and has increased almost 14 percent. Opportunistic crimes are especially rampant as residents endure more home invasions, carjackings, murders and attempted murders.

War-torn Afghanistan is another one of the world’s potential hot spots and there is much speculation about what will happen when western military forces finally withdraw from the country in the future. Suicide bombings are a constant danger in Kabul, as are other terrorist-style attacks. It’s unlikely that violent factions desiring to control the country will remain in the shadows when the west finally pulls out of the country.

Known as one of the most idyllic vacation locations in the Americas, Acapulco – like much of Mexico – has fallen under the violent influence of ultra-wealthy and ruthlessly violent drug cartels. Due to its location, control of Acapulco has prompted the cartels to engage each other in violent confrontation which often goes on gruesome public display in the form of decapitated bodies and other atrocities.

Known throughout the world as one of the primary operating locations for modern day pirates, life on land in Mogadishu is hardly ideal either. Compared to other cities, especially in the west, Mogadishu is essentially a lawless city where terrorists, kidnappers and criminals of all kinds run rampant. Authorities appear to be making efforts to restore some semblance of order, but their progress thus far has been limited.

Nobody can be considered safe in Karachi, including government officials and police, who are sometimes targeted by the city’s infamous “target killers,” who specialize in carrying out assassinations while riding on motorbikes. Anyone who can afford the relatively low cost of hiring one of these motorbike-riding assassins can target virtually anyone they want. But the target killers are not Karachi’s only problem. General lawlessness and violent struggles between political groups contribute to a murder rate that is about 25 percent higher than most of the world’s largest cities.

Mexico is certainly not the only country in the world that is being torn apart by violence related to the drug trade. Even the locals in Maceio are falling victim to addiction, as crack cocaine becomes easier and easier to come by, even for those living in poverty. As more and more residents accumulate drug debt that they are unable to pay off, they are used as examples by the cartels, and their lives are snuffed out without a second thought. Corruption of government and law enforcement officials means the cartels can often act without the risk of being captured or killed by the police or military.
