The intelligence-led operation targeted what police believe is a racket of motorcycle thieves terrorising different parts of the city.
SP Kawala said one suspect who was found with a suspected stolen motorcycle in Masajja A Cell, Masajja Parish, Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality in Wakiso District, led police to the whereabouts of his accomplices.
“A team of officers from Kikajo Police Station responded swiftly and arrested the suspect,” she said.
Police recovered a Haojue model motorcycle, registration number UMA 399GY, which was reportedly being transported for sale to an unknown destination.
The prime suspect was also found in possession of a panga allegedly used to threaten and subdue victims during robberies.
“In a series of related operations aimed at curbing crime in the city, police arrested dozens of suspects in coordinated crackdowns across Kampala,” SP Kawala added.
She said 32 suspects were arrested from areas around Clock Tower, Katwe Kinyoro (Nsuwa Zone), and Kibuye Parish in Makindye Division.
Another 47 suspects were arrested from Nateete, Ndeeba, and Lubaga areas during separate operations targeting criminal gangs accused of terrorising residents and robbing pedestrians, especially at night.
Police said exhibits recovered during the operations included pangas, knives, and suspected stolen items believed to have been taken from victims.
The suspects are currently detained at various police stations within Kampala Metropolitan Area as investigations continue.
