A fire broke out early Wednesday morning in a prison in Tangerang, a town west of the Indonesian capital. "Forty-one inmates have died, eight have been seriously injured and 72 have minor injuries," Jakarta Police Chief Fadil Imran told reporters.

Television footage showed fire department officials dealing with a fire that consumed one of the prison buildings, giving off a thick cloud of smoke. Firefighters have been able to control the blaze, which affected one of the prison's buildings, detained mainly prisoners convicted of drug trafficking.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, but many have found that the fire was caused by faults caused by poor electrical systems.
