DUBAI — The Dubai Police arrested three Indians for raping a four-year-old girl in a school bus. On January 11, the child’s mother informed the Bur Dubai Police station that three Indians, including 42-year-old driver MB, 43-year-old attendant J, and 39-year-old cleaner VST, who work for a school based in Nad Al Shiba had raped her daughter in the school bus on November 11, 2010.

The mother said that the father had dropped his daughter at the school in the morning. However, the girl left the school early as it was the last day and she took the school bus.

According to the mother, she had called the driver at 10am and had told him that she would wait outside her apartment after 15 minutes to pick up her child. However, the bus driver told her not to come until he called her.
An hour later the child was dropped at her home in Karama. According to the mother, there was no other student in the bus which was unusual.
While the mother was changing her daughter’s clothes she noticed blood spots on her dress. Suspecting something amiss, she took the child, who was hysterical, to the doctor in a private clinic who in turn advised the mother to take the daughter to Al Wasl hospital.
However, the parents, apprehensive about highlighting the issue and having problems with the school, decided to go to India.
The doctor in India said that the girl had been raped and had lost her virginity. Laboratory tests however revealed that the girl has not contracted any transmissible diseases.
After returning to Dubai, the mother informed the Bur Dubai Police Station that she suspected the bus driver and two other staff who often accompanied him in the bus, had raped the child.
According to the child, the bus driver stopped the bus at an unfamiliar place. Then, one of the staff gave her a candy and all of them took her to back seat and started touching her. After that, she started crying when she felt the pain and then they took her home.
Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Director of General Department of Investigation, said that the three suspects had confessed to their crime.
The suspects said that they were confident that the family of the child would never inform anybody about what had happened and that the issue would be closed.
According to Al Mansouri, the police reacted immediately after being informed by the family. A specialised police team started the investigation despite the delay in being informed.
The child’s mother had kept the clothes worn by the child at the time of the incident. The clothes were stained and carried evidences. The evidences have been sent to the forensic laboratory to see if they match with the suspects’ DNA. Al Mansouri said the police found that the suspects had raped her in the school bus and that the bus driver was the first to rape the girl followed by the other suspects.
The investigation team set traps for the criminals and they were arrested in places away from their workplace. Interrogation is still underway to find out whether the convicts have committed similar crimes earlier. — amira@khaleejtimes.com

GEMS Education has responded to the alleged incident of the rape of a four-year-old girl in a school bus involving one of its schools. A spokesperson of GEMS said: "On January 5, 2011, a parent from one of our schools approached us and made an allegation relating to an incident involving her child on a school bus on November 11, 2010. We have been very sensitive to the parents' wishes that this not be made public in the interest of the child.

On hearing the allegation, GEMS contacted the bus company and the staff were suspended pending investigation. GEMS also encouraged the parents to report the matter to the police. The suspects were handed over to the police by the school and the bus company.

The police have decided to refer the case to the Public Prosecution. The court will decide whether the men are guilty or innocent. No judgement has been handed down at this point."
The spokesperson added: "The safety of all children at GEMS is our highest priority and any allegation of this nature is greatly disturbing. The bus company involved transports 44,000 students every day and this is the first allegation of this type."
At GEMS' request the bus company has decided to introduce extra safety precautions including cameras on all its buses.

Are your children safe? Is there an urgent need to address such incidents? What initiatives should be taken to prevent child abuse?

This criminal act by 3 aged men is one of the most gruesome I have come across. It's been more than a day since I have read about this incident and I still find it hard to believe that somebody can behave like an animal. Being a mother of a 3 year old myself I also strongly believe that lady conductors who are probably mothers themselves should be kept in charge in the bus .These days not only girls but young boys require the same amount of safety from these kind of criminals. May Allah give the parents and the child the strength to cope with this disastrous incident. – Raufa Abdul Rashid, Ras Al Khaimah

Schools should use mini buses for the transportation of the students and buses should be controlled via satellite like Dubai Taxis. Child abuser should be hanged in front of public. - Abdulhameed Anjum, Dubai

As a parent, I think apart from introducing cameras as a safety measure, it's better to have a female attendant in every school bus. I feel the three suspects, must be punished severely so that it might be a lesson and this kind of incidents may not happen again. As a mother I can feel the parent's situation and I pray to God to give them & the child, strength and power to come out of this trauma. – Geethanjali Selva, Abu Dhabi
