Police in Luuka District are investigating an incident in which 26 pupils of Buwanda Primary School fell ill after eating white ants brought to school by one of their colleagues.
The pupils developed stomach pain on Friday morning, August 7, shortly after consuming the insects at the school in Buwanda Village, Bugomba Parish, Nawampiti Sub-county.
Police said the incident was first noticed by a Primary Three teacher after one pupil complained of stomach pain, with several others later developing similar symptoms.
The affected pupils were rushed to Ikonia Health Centre III and later referred to Kiyunga Health Centre IV for further treatment.
According to Busoga North Region Police spokesperson Samson Lubega, the white ants were reportedly brought to school by a pupil identified as Namukose Peace, who told investigators that her mother had given them to her.
However, police cautioned against concluding that the pupils were poisoned, saying investigations and medical assessments are still underway.
Police are investigating where the white ants were obtained, how they were prepared and whether they could have been contaminated.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.
