Zuma hits back at UK media reports

President Jacob Zuma hit back at Britain's media on Wednesday, saying disparaging commentary on his polygamous private life reflected an inbuilt superiority complex.

Zuma, who is paying a state visit to London, has been greeted by headlines in Britain's famously spiky press labelling him a "buffoon" and focusing on the husband-of-three's domestic arrangements.

In an interview with the Star, Zuma said that the coverage was disrespectful of his Zulu culture and echoed the views of South Africa's former colonial masters.

"When the British came to our country they said everything we are doing was barbaric, was wrong, inferior in whatever way ... I don't know why they are continuing thinking that their culture is more superior than others," he said.

Zuma said that the African National Congress (ANC) had fought against the apartheid regime so that the indigenous population of South Africa would be respected.

"Bear in mind that I am a freedom fighter and I fought to free myself, also for my culture to be respected," he said. "I've not looked down upon any culture of anyone ... and no one has been given an authority to judge others."

Colourful private life
Much of the coverage of Zuma's visit has focused on his colourful private life. Zuma married his latest wife in January, shortly before it emerged that he had fathered a love child with the daughter of a family friend.

An opinion piece in the right-wing Daily Mail said, "Jacob Zuma is a sex-obsessed bigot ... So why is Britain fawning over this buffoon."

The Daily Telegraph said that "for all the colourful characters who have visited the Palace during her 58 years on the throne, the South African president is possibly the first guest to be a polygamist".

A man is polygamous in nature!!..restricting people to monogamous marriage is unnatural, and I doubt whether is Godly as some religion puts it. however I will agree when people talk of economic constraints as an important reason to monogamous marriages. Why is a man capable of producing multimillion sperms and a woman few eggs and has menopouse? Lets not romanticise the western ideologies ( supported by christianity) that men have to have only one wife. Many of us a product of polygamous marriage and to a 4th or 5th wife, suppose our fathers were restricted to marry one wife..could we say anything now?...huo ni ushabiki wa mila na tamaduni za kuletwa kwa ndege au meli..

Tabia ya Zuma ni chafu, hakuna excuse. Kama unadai ni utamaduni basi ni utamaduni ulipitwa na wakati, wanawake wanahitaji dignity wasitendewe kama fucking machines. So far sijaona wisdom yoyote ya polygamy zaidi ya patriarchal tendency ya baadhi ya watu. They are much more than what you think, the only thing we are not following up as their religion allows them up to 4 wives. However, Zuma is not a muslim neither a Christian!!!

Mkuu i am not myopic. How many muslim men capable of marrying four wives do we have in Tanzania? Do they have four wives each? Do they have 20+ children, sleeping with daughters of friends, siring basterds, sleeping with HIV positive women and say "i took shower to minimize the risk of infection"

Qoran, hairuhusu kuoa kiholela ina eleza katika mazingira maalum unaweza kuoa second, third and forth wife. L:akini ni wachache sana wenye kutimiza masharti hayo, ndio maana si waislamu wote wana multiple wives.

Do you know that not all muslims condone this paractice of Islam? So it is not personal feelings, just a principle of human dignity,and women happens to be human just like Zuma. I wonder wht will happen if his new wife brings him 4 men.
