Zimbabwe has committed more than US$250 million towards upgrading hospitals across the country, with approximately 30 percent of the investment earmarked for maternal and child health infrastructure.

The commitment was announced during a high-level reproductive health event held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. The event was co-hosted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), FP2030 and the Gates Foundation, alongside partner governments including Zimbabwe.

The investment is expected to support improvements to hospital infrastructure and expand access to health services, particularly for women, children and families in areas where healthcare facilities and services remain limited.

Zimbabwe also committed US$2.25 million annually for family planning commodities in 2026 and 2027, according to UNFPA.

The announcement comes as Zimbabwe continues to face significant maternal and child health challenges. UNICEF reports that the country's 2022 Census recorded a maternal mortality ratio of 363 deaths per 100,000 live births, highlighting the continued need to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare.

The government has previously reported progress in reducing maternal mortality, with a UN statement noting a decline from 651 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2012 to 362 in 2022, alongside investments in skilled birth attendance, emergency obstetric care and antenatal services.

The latest commitment forms part of a wider push by countries and international partners to increase domestic and external financing for reproductive health. At the UNGA event, Burundi, Madagascar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe announced combined commitments of more than US$292 million of their own resources for health infrastructure, services and supplies.

For Zimbabwe, the government says the hospital investment is intended to strengthen the health system and improve access to essential services, particularly for women and children.
