Women have been barred from participating in a traditional procession ahead of the coronation of Tooro King-designate Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I on Tuesday.
The procession will begin at 10pm on Monday from Rwengoma Palace, pass through Fort Portal City and end at Karuziika Palace, where Nyabongo I is expected to arrive at around 3am.
According to Richard Rwabuhinga, head of protocol for the coronation organising committee, the exclusion of women is based on Tooro cultural practices governing the ritual. Women will, however, be allowed to attend the church service and the coronation ceremony on Tuesday.
Upon arrival at Karuziika Palace, Nyabongo I will face a mock battle at the royal entrance, known as Mugabante. He is expected to emerge victorious before entering the palace and taking his place on the royal throne.
Other traditional rituals will follow inside the palace, including turning upright royal regalia such as drums and spears that have remained upside down since the death of his predecessor, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Preparations for the coronation were continuing at Karuziika Palace on Sunday, with subjects delivering their contributions, known as okuhikya, while tents were being erected and the palace repainted and reorganised ahead of the ceremony.
Nyabongo I is scheduled to be formally crowned on Tuesday at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.
