On the 12th of January 2026, the National Bureau for Non-Government Organizations ordered atleast Five NGOs to close.
These included Human rights organizations, Media organizations and Election monitoring organizations.
The effected organizations included Chapter 4 Uganda, Alliance for Election Finance Monitoring, Human rights Network for Journalists Uganda National NGO forum and National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders.
They were suspended in claims that they were engaged in activities that breach the Ugandan laws and are a threat to national security as per section 42(d) of National NGOs act
This operation came in at a time after Human rights activist Sarah Bireete the ED of the center for constitutional Governance was arrested for unlawful acquisition of Electoral commission data.
The African Center for Media Excellence(ACME Africa) that has spent 15 years training and equipping journalists in Africa also joined the list of NGOs that were restricted from operating in Uganda.
What lies ahead of Human rights groups in Uganda as they remain a main target by the Government of Uganda.
