The West Nile Parliamentary Caucus has intensified calls for greater representation in Uganda’s top leadership positions, arguing that the region has remained underrepresented despite its contribution to national politics and development.
Speaking at Parliament, caucus chairperson and Obongi County MP Hassan Kaps Fungaroo said the sub-region has competent and experienced leaders capable of serving in senior government positions, including Cabinet and parliamentary leadership.
The caucus particularly pushed for more Cabinet appointments from West Nile, noting that the region allegedly lacks representation in influential administrative positions such as permanent secretaries. Fungaroo described the situation as unfair considering the number of educated and experienced professionals from the region.
The leaders also rallied support behind Terego Woman MP Rose Obiga for the Deputy Speaker position in the 12th Parliament, describing her as energetic, focused, and capable of handling the office effectively.
According to the caucus, West Nile has consistently supported the ruling National Resistance Movement government and continues to play a strategic role in Uganda due to its location bordering both the South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as hosting large refugee populations.
The demand comes at a politically significant moment following ongoing shifts within Parliament leadership and the formation of the 12th Parliament. The caucus said it intends to lobby for committee chairmanships, accountability committee positions, and broader inclusion in the Executive arm of government.
This is not the first time leaders from West Nile have demanded more influence in government. Similar appeals were previously made to former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah to lobby for Cabinet slots and top government appointments for the region.
