To thousands of religious minorities in Iraq who are under siege from Islamic militants, possibly in combination with U.S. airstrikes, are also on the way.
"An effort has begun," the official said. Planes are in the air, the official said, but they have not yet started U.S. humanitarian airdrop missions. There are fighter jets for protection, the source said , a senior U.S. official told CNN Thursday.
