In Summary

  • Wanyama has been nominated alongside Egypt's Mohammed Salah and Senegalese Pape Mousa Konate. He becomes only the third Kenyan player after Jonathan Niva and Peter Dawo to be nominated for CAF awards.
  • Wanyama has been a revelation this year and the nomination confirms his growing stature.
  • In the National Team of the Year category, reigning African champions Zambia have been nominated along with the team Chipolopolo beat in 2012 Afcon final, Cote d'Ivoire.

Kenyan international Victor Wanyama has been listed among Africa's most promising talents.

The Celtic star has been nominated for Africa's Most Promising Talent award during this year's Confederation of African Football (Caf) awards that will be held in Accra Ghana on December 20.

In the National Team of the Year category, reigning African champions Zambia have been nominated along with the team Chipolopolo beat in 2012 Afcon final, Cote d'Ivoire.

2013 Afcon debutants Cape Verde are also in the running as is Central African Republic.

In the Women's National Team of the Year, recently crowned African Women's Champions, Equatorial Guinea will fight it out with Ghana's U-17 side that finished third in this year's FIFA World Cup and Nigeria's Super Falcons for the honours.

Most sought after player

Wanyama - a former World Hope, AFC Leopards and Belgian side Germinal Beerschot - has become one of the most sought after African players in Europe with English sides Manchester United, Newcastle, Liverpool and Queens Park Rangers all lining to watch him.

Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has even stated he is ready to match the asking prize for the player and take him to Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager Sr Alex Fergusson has been collecting data on Wanyama who started his club career at World Hope (now City Stars) in the Kenyan Premier League and also had short stints with AFC Leopards and Tusker before moving to Belgian club Germinia Beerschot.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has received glowing reports about Wanyama and has been informed the player wishes to seal a move to England," stated British paper Daily Mail.

But even with the interest from big spenders in England, Celtic were not willing to let go of one of their most priced asset.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon says he is not surprised clubs of that calibre are considering the 21-year-old.
