The Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), Mariam Wangadya, has agreed to surrender an industrial generator that was purchased using resources from the commission, amid queries over how the equipment was acquired.
The issue came to light during scrutiny of the commission’s procurement and financial management, with questions raised over the acquisition of two industrial generators. One of the recipients has already returned the generator, while Wangadya has agreed to surrender hers.
Members of the commission also admitted to allegations that funds intended to facilitate UHRC activities were being routed through the personal bank accounts of staff members. The practice was flagged as contrary to established financial regulations and procedures.
The procurement concerns are reportedly part of irregular transactions estimated at about UGX 160 million, including equipment allegedly acquired for personal use.
The developments come as the commission faces increased scrutiny over its governance and financial management. The matter is being examined by Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE).
The scrutiny also follows internal disagreements within the commission and Wangadya’s rejected resignation in July 2026, adding to questions surrounding the leadership and administration of the human rights body.
