Wananchi wa DRC wameandamana leo hii wakipinga na kushinikiza uchaguzi baada ya Tume ya Taifa ya Uchaguzi kupeleka mbele uchaguzi mkuu mpaka 2018.

Opposition protests continue to cause tension and paralyse business in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Congolese capital Kinshasa. Traders have been closing their shops in response to opposition calls for public participation in the ongoing election protests contesting the extension of President Joseph Kabila’s term of office which is contrary to the country’s constitution.

This comes in the wake of a failed national dialogue in which the country’s electoral body decided the postponement of general elections that were due to have been held from next month to April 2018. The national dialogue which was championed by the European Union (EU) was boycotted by major political parties in the country last month after they foresaw that the dialogue that was aimed at harmonizing the warring factions based on politics, tribal and religious differences was being manipulated by President Kabila to favour him for a life presidency bid.

The country has had several protests against President Kabila’s intention to extend his stay in power for over a year now. The EU issued a statement warning that if elections in DRC are not held by next year, it will be forced to joining the United States and other development partners to put sanctions on the country.

The United Nations has also warned the Kabila government that the extension of elections could lead to further protests and hence pose insecurity to the country whose eastern part is largely under control of the United Nations forces under the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

Still the biggest peace mission under UN mandate with a 25,000 man strong- force, MONUSCO has opted to send some forces to oversee the ongoing protests in Kinshasa to avoid further bloodshed. About 60 people are feared to have been killed so far in a series of demonstrations as per civil society organizations though government claims the number is less.
