Four U.S. military personnel were detained by the Libyan government on Friday, American officials told The New York Times.

The circumstances surrounding how and why they were detained is currently unclear.

“We are seeking to further ascertain the facts and ensure their release,” said Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman. “We are in touch with Libyan officials on this issue.”
