A woman broke down in tears at Wakiso Central Daily Market after discovering that her name had been left off the new stall allocation list, despite allegedly paying Shs2 million in a bribe to the former market leadership.
The incident came as Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara dissolved the old market committee and installed an interim leadership following concerns over the allocation of stalls.
The minister established that the former market executives had allegedly sidelined genuine local vendors and instead allocated stalls to individuals who paid bribes.
Wakiso District secured World Bank funding to construct a modern market expected to accommodate nearly 800 vendors. A temporary structure has been established to accommodate traders as construction of the new market gets underway.
The new interim leadership is expected to oversee the reorganisation and allocation of stalls to ensure genuine vendors are prioritised.
