The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has intensified its fight against substandard products, successfully conducting a targeted market surveillance operation in Lwengo District that led to the seizure of substandard bar soap and equipment used in its production.
According to UNBS, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers from harmful and non-compliant products circulating on the Ugandan market.
During the enforcement exercise, inspectors confiscated the suspected substandard soap as well as machinery and other equipment believed to have been used in its manufacture. Authorities also arrested a suspect who is currently in custody pending prosecution before the Standards and Utilities Court.
UNBS said the action underscores its commitment to ensuring that products manufactured, imported, and sold in Uganda meet the required quality and safety standards.
The bureau cited the UNBS Act, which mandates the agency to enforce standards in order to protect the public from harmful and substandard products.
The agency further noted that the Act prohibits the use of the UNBS Distinctive Mark without proper certification and it also prohibits the importation, manufacture, or sale of products that do not comply with compulsory Uganda standards.
UNBS has warned manufacturers, distributors, and traders against engaging in the production or sale of uncertified products, emphasizing that violators will face legal action.
