FIVE-time World Cup holders, Brazil, will arrive in Dar es Salaam on June 5 ahead of their international friendly match against Taifa Stars two days later, it has been revealed.
Brazil, who are the most successful national football team in the world, will play compatriot Marcio Maximo's side in their final preparatory match before going to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup tournament.
Brazilian Ambassador to Tanzania, Francisco Carlos Soares Luz, confirmed in Dar es Salaam today that the 23-man world cup squad, under the tutelage of former star Dunga, will jet in the city on Saturday, June 5.
This means that the Tanzanians will host the most decorated and most fancied football team in the world for about three days, allowing many local fans to have a chance of a lifetime of watching top players from the Land of King Pele training or roaming around Dar es Salaam for shopping.
Luz also revealed that the highly-awaited international friendly encounter will be played under floodlights at the state-of-the-art arena. The ambassador said two officials from Brazil were expected in the city today to hold final talks with the government regarding the tour.
Luz described Brazil's impending training tour in the country as a good opportunity for the team to fine tune and make final touches prior to kick-off of the 2010 world Cup, the first to be held on African soil.
He said the match would also boost Tanzania's preparation for African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals, but this is only if Maximo's men would get past Rwanda and qualify for the finals to be hosted by Sudan next year.
The day that Brazil are scheduled to land in Dar is the same day Taifa Stars will be visiting Rwanda for the return leg of the CHAN qualifiers. Following a 1-1 draw at home, the Stars must win or post a draw of more than one goal to go through into the finals.
The country is already buzzing with excitement in the wake of the confirmation that star-studded Brazil would tour Tanzania on their way to South Africa. While some still do not believe it, some are already planning to purchase their tickets early so as not to miss the ''life-time opportunity''.
Among the star players in Dunga's team, is Real Madrid's Ricardo Kaka, Robinho de Souza now playing on loan at Santos from Manchester City, trio Champions League winners, Inter Milan's Lucio, Maicon and Julio Cesar, Sevilla striker Louis Fabiano, and Barcelona's Daniel Alves.
Unlucky for those who fancy Ronaldinho Gaucho, the soccer ace has been left out for the finals by Dunga. Ambassador Luz defended the coach's decision to leave out the AC Milan star. Luz believes Dunga made the right decision, saying Ronaldinho was out of form to be considered.
Other household names not included in the squad are Gaucho's teammate, Alexander Pato, Neymar and Adriano.
In another development, Luz said that Brazil are favourite to win the World Cup, but also believes England, Spain, Italy and Germany have what it takes to win it. Brazil won the World Cup in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002).
A common quip about football is: "The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it". It is the only team to have played in every World Cup. It goes by the nicknames Canarinho ((Little Canary), A Seleção (The Selection), Verde-Amarela (Green and Yellow) and The Samba Kings.
