MOSES Kipsiro raced into the record books with Uganda’s first double gold at a major international event yesterday.

He again defied a Kenyan onslaught, charging into the lead in the final 400m and sprinting to the finish in a pulsating Commonwealth Games 10000m final.

Already with a 5000m gold in his shelf, Kipsiro had promised to keep the Kenyans under pressure in the 25-lap race –– and indeed he just did that.

The Ugandan surged into the lead pack after four laps, keeping behind three Kenyans Daniel Salel, Joseph Birech and Titus Mbishei as he calculated his move. The Kenyans tried to interchange with the pace setter, but Kipsiro kept his rhythm before striking in the final lap.

“They run as a team and that is the only way I would have beaten them. I am so joyous. Thanks be to God,” said the excited Kipsiro.

The closest he ever came to yesterday’s feat was at the 2006 Africa championships when he won gold in 10000m and bronze in 5000m.

Kipsiro, 24, was inspired for yesterday’s race by a phone call phone from President Yoweri Museveni after his 5000m triumph last week.

He becomes the first runner to do the track long distance double since Cecil Matthews of New Zeland in the British Empire Games in 1938 (3miles & 6 miles)

Kipsiro clocked 27:57.39 and was a long way off Kenenisa Bekele’s 27:17.53 world record but enough to break the Kenyan hold in the long distances in New Delhi.

Kipsiro has emerged as a real star in the Indian capital because of being one of the few men able to tame Kenya’s distance runners.

Muhammed Muruli was the only other Ugandan to win two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games, though not at the same edition. He won gold in the in Edinburgh, 1970 and another in New Zealand in 1972.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Kiplagat finished fourth behind three Kenyans in the steeplechase while Janet Achola helped Uganda advance to the final of the women long relays.

Mimi sielewi Watanzania wenzangu mliopo nyumbani hili swala mnalionaje, Commonwealth games ambapo elite sportsman wengi duniani hawashiriki,Tanzania mpaka sasa hivi hawana medal !!!!!!!!!!.Kenya ana gold 8 na medali zingine.Uganda ana gold 2,sisi watanzania surely something is wrong-is it kwamba hatuna genes za michezo, swala la matayarisho i dont buy it,cause kenyans anatoka milimani leo kesho anashinda.Mimi naamini prowess katika sporting field kwa nchi nyingi za africa is directly related to development of a country.Kama COMMONWEALTH games is a mountain we cant climb why bother about the olympics. We should now switch our scarce resources to things that at least can produce a tangible result- Sometimes, believe me being a tanzanian comes at a price.

On the other hand a TZ athlete got lapped on the same race. Havent we got the Kip(somen) surnames in TZ it appears the tribal people are blessed with the long distance running. They're the same people Kip(chogis) and Kip(siros) only separated by borderlines havent we got them in 'TZ' honestly we need to win something internationally.

TZ as a system ina components which depend to each other. Naamini uongozo umefeli and therefore mengi nayo down .......................................................

One of the rare Smatta's positive comments on this forum!
On this one I agree with you is something to deal with the organisation of the corresponding Federations.

Kipsiro?? Thats sounds like a Kenyan name, ama kuna wa-Kalenjin huko Uganda?

Its true he is a Kenyan. I think Uganda should not steal from their neighbour, its a shame this happened M7 should make sure that this does not happen again.
