Kampala - Uganda: The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has dragged the government to court over what it describes as an unlawful military-style siege on the home of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the leader of the National Unity Platform - Daily Monitor

The case, filed at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kasangati, names the Attorney General as the respondent and challenges the continued deployment of security forces at Kyagulanyi’s residence in Magere, Wakiso District.
According to ULS, the heavy security presence has restricted movement and access to the home, raising concerns about violations of constitutional rights, including personal liberty and freedom of movement.

An affidavit by ULS Vice President Anthony Asiimwe provides further insight into the situation, detailing accounts from Kyagulanyi’s wife, Barbara Itungo Kyagulanyi. She reportedly described persistent drone flyovers, nighttime deployment of police and military personnel, alleged attempts to access the home without authorization, and incidents where non-consensual photographs were taken—actions she says have caused distress to the family.

ULS is now seeking court orders for the immediate withdrawal of armed personnel, an end to surveillance activities, and a permanent injunction preventing further interference with the residence.

The developments add to ongoing concerns by legal and human rights actors, who argue that such actions undermine the rule of law and democratic freedoms. Government authorities, however, have previously maintained that such deployments are necessary for maintaining security and public order.

The matter now awaits judicial determination, which is expected to clarify the legality of the continued security presence.

These developments come at a time when Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and his family have fled the country.
