A new chapter in Uganda’s urban mobility journey begins today as E-Bus Xpress (EBX) officially launches operations in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The government-backed initiative introduces modern electric buses to the capital’s roads, promising cleaner, more efficient, and cashless public transport for commuters.
The rollout features locally manufactured Kayoola electric buses from Kiira Motors Corporation, starting on the Kampala-Ntinda route at a fare of 2,000 Ugandan shillings per trip. All payments are cash-free, marking the first widespread implementation of electronic fare systems in Uganda’s public transport sector.
The Kampala Capital City Authority plans to deploy eight additional buses by the end of the month as part of the initial phase.
E-Bus Xpress, a subsidiary of Kiira Motors, first debuted in Jinja City in November 2024. Since then, the service has transported over 180,000 passengers, covered more than 250,000 green kilometers, and earned praise for its comfort, reliability, and environmental benefits.
The expansion to Kampala aligns with Uganda’s national e-mobility strategy, which targets the deployment of 15,000 electric buses by 2040.
Officials highlight the project’s role in reducing emissions, easing traffic congestion, and positioning Uganda as a regional leader in green transport.
While riders in Jinja have welcomed the clean, dignified travel experience, some Kampala commuters have raised concerns about supporting infrastructure, such as dedicated bus lanes, especially given existing challenges with potholes and mixed traffic from motorcycles and taxis.
The launch comes with strong backing from the Ugandan government and reflects broader efforts to modernize public transport through homegrown innovation at Kiira Motors. As operations scale, E-Bus Xpress aims to deliver scheduled, value-for-money intercity and intracity services across the country.
This milestone underscores Uganda’s commitment to sustainable development, blending technology, local manufacturing, and environmental stewardship to shape the future of mobility.
