Speaker-Among-and-Norbert-Mao-look-set-for-Speakership-race.jpg

Kampala, Uganda – Democratic Party (DP) President Norbert Mao has signaled interest in the Speaker of Parliament position in the incoming legislature.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Mao said he has received encouragement from various MPs and political leaders to consider the role. “I qualify,” he stated, highlighting that his experience, education, and political track record make him a strong candidate.

Mao also referenced the cooperation agreement between the DP and NRM, which he says could enable a DP candidate to secure backing from the ruling party. “Such collaboration makes it possible for someone from our party to contest effectively, even against a majority party candidate,” Mao explained.
The current Speaker, recently endorsed by the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the NRM, is also selfishly guarding her seat, creating a tense environment. negotiations, could challenge the status quo and bring a fresh dynamic to parliamentary leadership.

While he has not officially declared his candidacy, Mao emphasized that any decision will be made deliberately and in the national interest.

If Mao chooses to run and secures key NRM support, his bid could mark a rare instance of bipartisan collaboration in Uganda’s Parliament and signal a shift in the current balance of power within parliamentary leadership.
