UEDCL authorities in Kayunga are to use the military to curb power theft and electricity infrastructure vandalism blamed for revenue loss and persistent outages.

Speaking during opening of Elektra Technical Services (U) Ltd offices at Namagabi Village in Kayunga Town Council on Oct 26, UEDCL Kayunga Manager Phiona Mbabazi said Kayunga is among Central region districts with high vandalism and illegal connections.

Kayunga is among districts in the central region with big number of electricity infrastructure vandalism and illegal power connections which can only be curbed with UEDCL being assisted by military, she said.

"UEDCL gives Kayunga area power worth Shs3b a month but because of power thefts, we end up collecting only Shs2b with the Shs1b revenue deficit being lost. We are determined to arrest anyone caught stealing power because I want to recover all the money," Mbabazi said.

"We should jointly fight to curb power thefts because it is one of the leading causes of power outages in this area. Report your neighbours who steal power," she added.

Kayunga has recently registered wire and transformer thefts, especially in Kayunga, Busaana, Kangulumira sub-counties and Kayunga Town Council.

Mbabazi blamed rampant outages across country on old and dilapidated equipment inherited from Umeme, appealing for patience as UEDCL maintains and buys new equipment.

"I promise that UEDCL is going to offer contracts to Elektra because we already know that you have been doing good work," she said.

Kayunga District Police Commander Hussein Mugarura pledged support to UEDCL and Elektra to protect infrastructure.

Elektra proprietor Henry Buyinza urged locals to use their services to curb power wastage and electrocution, saying company has provided jobs to over 50 youths in district
