Why is Botswana richer than other African countries?

Botswana is richer than most other African countries because of 3 basic factors:

• DIAMONDS

At independence, the country had no more than 12km of tarred roads in 1965. It also had less than 10 graduates. The discovery of diamonds changed all that. Botswana is now the 2nd largest producer of diamonds in the world and the revenues earned have been properly accounted for and used to transform the country.

• VERY LOW LEVELS OF CORRUPTION

Corruption in Botswana has been very low. This was a legacy left by the first president of the country, Sir Seretse Khama who ruled as a benign democrat from 1965 to 1984. He was incorruptible and ensured that those who served under him were also.

Botswana has severally be rated as the least corrupt country in Africa. Corruption, which has been the bane of many African countries, has been almost non-existent here but has grown lately.

• SIR SERETSE KHAMA LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Seretse Khama as the new president introduced many policies that were advanced for that era.

He enthroned the Rule of Law, enforced contracts, allowed market forces to work and so on. These far-reaching policies were the sought The Economist magazine would have recommended and not the socialistic ones many newly independent African countries like Tanzania were embarking on which were to leave them worse off than under colonial rule.

These are the 3 reasons why Botswana is where it is today. Personally, I feel the country could have done better with far deeper policies. Anyway, one must not discount the great progress made since 1965.

Kama diamond ingekuwa sababu DRC Congo ingeongoza kwa utajiri.
