I find this perturbing; the vast majority of Tanzanians can only speak one language, Kiswahili. A Tanzanian friend called John David (yes, many Tanzanians have two English names) explained this situation as a repercussion of the country's socialist past. Nyerere discouraged the learning of local languages and imposed the coastal language, Kiswahili, on the nation.
