On Saturday, Yanga stunned Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League. Unfortunately and to the dismay of millions of fans in Tanzania and Africa the match was not televised.
MGB, the agency that had an agreement with Yanga to ensure the match would be aired in the Middle East and North Africa region as well as Tanzania if the latter party decided to, have written a clarification letter explaining what actually happened.
The full transcript reads:
My attention has been drawn to reports emanating from a section of Yanga SCs leadership, insinuating that the rights holders was behind the unfortunate incident where Tanzanians were unable to view the match.
As per the contract we signed with Yanga, we were to broadcast the match in Middle-East and North-Africa.
The mandate to televise in Tanzania territory was not in our domain.
Yanga FC signed a contract with MGB, and within the stipulated time frame, MGB wired a deposit from their account account in Egypt to Yangas bank account.
But we encountered an unfortunate beyond our reach and our team from Cairo couldnt board their flight on time.
Despite a written letter on Egyptian Embassy letter-head by the deputy ambassador that MGB is a reputable agency, despite guarantees from TFF president, Jamal Malinzi and the Egyptian Ambassador in Egypt, despite numerous guarantees by Al Ahly FC management that they will pay the cash after the match, Yanga FC were adamant.
When they finally saw sense, it was unfortunate that Star TV had already made their way back to their offices and it was too late.
The matter has not only caused discomfort to Tanzanians, but Egyptians as well and has left a sour taste in an era where countries are trying to build relations, and especially in football where we are in the era of player transfers and knowledge sharing.
It was a good opportunity for Tanzanian players to showcase their talent to the Middle-East and North Africa, generate interest and maybe get requests from foreign clubs for players to transfer thereby boosting revenues of the club but due to the unfortunate circumstance, this was not to be. And moreso that Yanga won, it would be a household name world over with people watching clips on Youtube of the goal scorer.
