Global fund commits $521 million (Shs1.9 trillion) to Uganda for 2026-2028, targeting HIV, TB, and malaria through health system strengthening and expanded treatments, marking a $81 million drop from the prior cycle.
Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of health services at the ministry of health said the funds are substantially enough to address the handling of the three diseases despite a reduction in funding.
We received a letter from the Global Fund confirming to us that Uganda has been allocated 521 million dollars. Definitely, this is a reduction from the previous grant, which was about 80 million dollars more. But I must say that this still remains a very substantial amount," he said.
He pointed out that the funding will strengthen health systems, expand antiretroviral therapy (ART) access, and reduce new HIV infections.
"In terms of HIV, it means that we also need to be able to reduce new infections," he said.
Uganda has reduced HIV prevalence from 18% to 4.9% since the early 2000s, with 37,000 new infections yearly, while TB affects 197 per 100,000 people annually; the funds aim to locate 10,000 unreported TB cases and cut HIV deaths to 5,000 by 2030.
