Marie Stopes Uganda has reduced the price of a packet of Lifeguard condoms from Shs2,000 to Shs700 per packet as part of efforts to make HIV prevention more affordable and accessible.
The price cut was announced during the launch of the “Guard Your Game” nationwide awareness campaign in Kasenge, Wakiso District.
Marie Stopes Uganda’s Head of Marketing and Communications, Sandra Arinaitwe, said the reduction targets communities in high-risk areas, where access to affordable protection remains a concern.
Kasenge was selected to launch the campaign because of worrying HIV transmission figures in the area.
The intervention comes amid concerns over rising new HIV infections in Kampala. During a recent Kampala HIV/TB stakeholders meeting, KCCA treatment and care lead Dr Douglas Tuhumwire reported that testing at KCCA health facilities showed an average of 30 new HIV infections daily among those tested.
He said the figure was based on findings from 649,570 people tested.
