Taxi drivers have been urged to avoid shortcuts and prioritise passenger safety during the rainy season, as wet road conditions increase the risks faced by road users.
Robert Sekitoreko, vice-chairperson of the New Taxi Park and a leader in the Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF), cautioned drivers against taking potentially dangerous routes to save time. He also urged passengers not to pressure drivers into using unsafe roads.
Sekitoreko welcomed government efforts to rehabilitate and construct roads, saying improved infrastructure would help ease challenges faced by taxi operators during the rainy season.
In a separate appeal, he asked passengers who had lost or forgotten belongings at the New Taxi Park or in taxis operating from the facility to contact the park’s office. He said claimants would be required to provide proof of ownership before recovered items are returned.
