The Catholic Church of Tanzania denounced the violations of democratic principles and freedom of expression by the government of President John Magufuli, accusing him of endangering “national unity” in a pastoral letter published on Sunday.

“Political activities are prohibited by the instrumentalization of the police,” the letter by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Tanzania read. The Church has been accused in recent months by the opposition of remaining silent in the face of “the dictatorial drift” of President Magufuli.

“The activities of political parties, such as public gatherings, demonstrations, marches, debates inside premises, which are the right of every citizen, are suspended until the next elections,” the bishops further bemoaned.
If we allow this climate to continue, let us not be surprised to find ourselves tomorrow in more serious conflicts that will destroy the foundations of peace and national unity.

Denouncing “violations of the Constitution and national laws”, the statement also stressed that “media are closed or temporarily suspended, thus restricting the right of citizens, to be informed, freedom of opinion and the right to privacy and expression”.

The clergy also noted that the current political atmosphere bred “division and hatred that could endanger peace, security and the lives of citizens.”

They also point to tensions that continue to mark by-elections at different levels. “These elections leave a feeling of anger, a thirst for revenge and a lack of interest in other elections,” they noted.

“If we allow this climate to continue, let us not be surprised to find ourselves tomorrow in more serious conflicts that will destroy the foundations of peace and national unity,” warned the bishops.

The Catholic Church was criticized for being silent after the alleged assassination attempt in September 2017 on Tanzanian MP Tundu Lissu, the opposition chief in parliament.

Lissu, who is also president of the Bar Association, is currently being hospitalized in Brussels after months of intensive care in Kenya.

Although the attack was carried out in broad daylight, in a residential area guarded by the police, no suspect has yet been arrested. The parliamentary party, Chadema, accuses the government of being behind the attack.

Nicknamed “Tingatinga” (Bulldozer in Swahili), President Magufuli has made an impression since taking office at the end of 2015, being unyielding in the fight against corruption.

But his unconventional and brutal style earned him the reputation of being autocratic and populist by his detractors, while freedom of expression is increasingly reduced in the country.

Opposition party meetings banned, newspapers closed, and journalists and artists beaten or threatened with death for criticizing government.

Hata nyumbani ukimuona mzazi ni mkali ujue ana maovu mengi sana anayafichia kwenye ukali ili aogopwe,MTU yeyeto mkali huwa ana shida ya kisaikolojia anakuwa hajui japo udhani anajua, anakua ni muoga na ajiamini hivo ukali kwake ni silaha ya kukuweka mbali usijue madhaifu yake,ila ni watu wa kuwaonea huruma uteseka sana kisaikolojia,maana upwaya kwenye nyanja nyingi.

Kuna mijitu humu jf imetumwa kazi yao kusoma kila uzi na kuuponda haraka iwapo unagusa au kupinga serikali. Huu ni uzwazwa na matumizi mabaya ya rasilimali watu na fedha za umma.

The existing constitution is, to a large extent, the source of the problem. The presidency is bestowed with massive powers using them arbitrarily to silent and suppress the dissent.

Look at the way free media have been curtailed and the opposition politicians have been dragged before the courts to answer fictitious incitement charges, all these abuses are believed to be orchestrated by the executive arm of the government.

It's high time all men and women of goodwill as well as organizations dedicated to human rights throughout the country to come together to condemn in the most uncertain terms the constant violation of human rights in this country and to pressure the regime to come to its senses by implementing the tenets of the rule of law.

Magufuli alisema amesikitika na kukasirika sana jinsi Tanzania Daima lilivyofukuza wawekezaji kwa kuandika Watanzania wote tuna ukimwi by and large.

Sasa, ni bad press ipi mbaya zaidi na inayosomwa dunia nzima, story ya Tanzania Daima au Agency French Press?

AFP sio gazeti au TV station moja ya nchi fulani, AFP ni kama Associated Press au Reuters, habari zao zinauzwa na kusambazwa kwenye vyombo dunia nzima, hii habari itasomwa dunia nzima, na kama JPM kweli anajali madhara ya bad press angekuwa yeye mwenyewe hafanyi mambo yanayoipaka matope Tanzania, kama kupoteza watu, kuwatupa baharini na kuchochea wawapige risasi "wasaliti" mchana nje ya bunge. Mzee huyu ni faker, ana hasira za uongo, alivyoongea kwa uchungu kuhusu Tanzania Daima ungedhani anajaaaali bad press kwa international observers, mwongo mtupu!

Only foolish people dare to influence a good Tanzanian Citizens to go for public gathering, demonstration, marches, debates e.t.c. in the name of 'National Unit' in stead of to work hard for the development themselves and our National

Wala rushwa wengi wamekuwa watoto wapenzi wa baadhi ya haya makanisa. Na hakuna anayekemea rushwa hizo
