Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. October 28, 2011
- Tanzania’s police have alerted the public to possible attack by Somalia’s terrorist Al Shabaab group, saying every citizen should watch out and report to the force unfamiliar persons. “What is happening in Kenya can also occur in Tanzania,” Tanzania’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Said Mwema said, underlining the need for security organs of East African countries to collaborate in a military offensive against Al Shabaab terrorists. Mwema told journalists here that some militias of the Somali group linked to the recent attacks in Kenya were from East African countries.

Observing that acts of terrorism could spill over to Kenya’s neighbours, notably Tanzania and Uganda, he said the Tanzanian Police Force supported their Kenyan counterparts “by providing them with intelligence information.”

According to the IGP, Tanzanian authorities have taken steps to beef up security along the country’s borders, including the coastal waters in the Indian Ocean.

“I would like to assure the public that our armed forces are on the alert to ensure security on all borders of the country,” Mwema said, adding that 13 suspected pirates arrested this year were undergoing prosecution in court.

“Acts of piracy and illegal migration have been noticed in regions bordering on the Indian Ocean and at this time fighting terrorism is the priority of the police force,” he added.
