Tanzania Human Rights Violations Addressed at the 40th Session of the Human Rights Council conference
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, addressed the human rights violations in her statement to the 40th session of the Human Rights Council conference held in Geneva from 25th February to 22nd March this year.
In her statement, the UN High Commissioner raised various human rights concerns in the country such as introduction of laws that set obstacles in the registration of political parties and limit freedom to hold significant party activities such as rallies and taking public stand on issues. "This will clearly hamper prospects for free and fair elections in 2020" said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Her statement further addressed introduction of legislation that curbs on digital communications, freedom of speech, press and media outlets, and publications of statistics that are not government approved. Attacks on various civil figures, kidnappings and killings were also raised as issues of concerns. Other raised concerns include Policies that limit pregnant girls from their right to access education and health, attacks on the LGBTIQ community and prohibition of HIV prevention activities.
"This climate denies Tanzanians their rights and may seriously deepen grievances and tensions, particularly as elections approach. There is still time for the Government to reinstate fundamental freedoms, to enable the broadest possible democratic Civic space." Said Michelle Bachelet, who then called upon council members to engage Tanzania bilaterally on its rights situation, and urged Tanzania to accept visits from Special Rapporteurs to advice on measures to protect public freedoms and other human rights concerns.
The conference was attended by Commissioners and State Ministers from various United Nations members, and Tanzania was represented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Professor Palamagamba John Aidan Mwaluko kabudi who attended from 25th to 26th February and replied to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' statement.
