CHADEMA faces backlash over 'naive' stance on Tanzania-DRC relations

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania

Tanzania’s leading opposition party CHADEMA faces sharp criticism after Vice Chairman John Heche questioned the strategic necessity of bilateral ties with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The remarks, made after DRC President Félix Tshisekedi’s official working visit, drew immediate pushback from political analysts and regional experts. They labelled the stance “naive” and warned that undermining these diplomatic channels threatens vital national interests.

The fallout highlights critical economic ties between the neighbours:
• Massive trade volume: The nations share a $794 billion trade relationship.
• Logistical gateway: Tanzania acts as the primary maritime trade corridor for eastern DRC.
• Infrastructure pipeline: Dar es Salaam is expanding its new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR)—which currently runs electric trains between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma—to link DRC, Rwanda and Burundi.

Critics argue that failure to grasp these geopolitical fundamentals disqualifies politicians from national leadership and call for swift re-education on the region’s shared economic future.
