Trials on new varieties of maize seed at the Sh7 billion Galana/Kulalu irrigation project have yielded positive results. The breakthrough on four varieties set to produce 20,000 bags of maize from 500 hectares next month is an achievement after previous failed test runs. It is part of the 2,000 hectares of virgin land under trials in Tana River County under a project done with the latest technology and expertise from the Israeli government. The development is an assurance that the project is on track as it was the centre of bilateral talks between Kenya and Israel during President Uhuru Kenyatta' s visit early this year. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu jets into the country today for a two-day visit, which will include a follow-up on the project."We have made huge progress on this project... Next month, we will be harvesting approximately 40 bags per hectare," said Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa. The CS, who toured the project yesterday in the company of Irrigation Principal Secretary Patrick Nduati and National Irrigation Board General Manager Mugambi Gitonga, said the country would soon be food sufficient soon following the breakthrough. "The PM (Israeli) visit will definitely firm up this project because it was one of the centre-pieces of engagement in Jerusalem, a declaration that the two leaders signed. Netanyahu's visit is set to expand the bilateral support and roll out the project to other regions," said the CS. With 2,000 hectares, the country is assured of around 80,000 bags of maize. Presently, Kenya imports 10 million bags annually to bridge local production shortfall, especially in traditional food growing regions. The minister admitted that coming up with the top four best maize seed varieties was not an easy task and this was not the final run, as other crops will be tested. Kenya is partnering with Israel to learn the latest technology that will cure the perennial food scarcity, especially with unpredictable weather. "The project was initially to cost Sh14 billion but was scaled down to Sh7 billion. We are engaging Israeli expertise for rotational crops," said the CS.

bado hamja tii

Galana irrigation scheme will be in total 1.5mn acres or 2034km² of land that is 1/20 the size of Rwanda

on it ,they will plant

maize -250,000 acres
livestock production for meat, poultry etc 400,000 acres
sugarcane -150,000 acres
beans, potatoes etc on the rest

right now that are testing for the best seeds to be used in which they have selected the punda milia maize variety to be planted for the test phase which will initially be 500 acres then expanded to 2000acres then to 10000acres and finally 250,000acres come 2018....

A dam has already been constructed and ap access roads -157km Muram road....

they have set aside 200acres for an industrial park that will manufacture to from raw material to packed finish goods soon large silos like the ones in Nakuru will be set up there also an airport will be put up for cargo only

when fully functional the government expects 250,000acres for maize to produce 10-15mn bags every three months since it will not depend on Rain but irrigation thus in a year GALANA ALONE WILL PRODUCE 40-50MN bags of maize +70mn produced by farmers country wide Kenya will be producing what Tanzania Rwanda and Uganda produce combined

that is Maize alone

and by 2030 Kenya wants to be with sudan

currently
Sudan has 19,000,000 acres of land under irrigation
Egypt has 28,000,000 acres

south Africa has 12,000,000acres

Kenya has 560,000 acres but galana will push us to 2,102,000acres

Ethiopia has 1,000,000acres

Tanzania has a mere 300,000 acres under irrigation

Kenya's vision 2030 wants to put 35,000,000 acres to irrigation

therefore 35,000km² of land in Kenya of the total 589,000km² total size of kenya -which will be bigger than Rwanda is to be irrigated by 2030

Galana irrigation project fails to meet target in second phase

Despite Sh3 billion so far being spent on the Galana Kulalu irrigation scheme, the second crop did not perform well due El-Nino rains, failing to meet its target of 40 bags per acre.

However, according to the Cabinet Secretary of Irrigation Eugene Wamalwa, it is expected that the third crop planted on 500 acres of land to be harvested in August will be a success.

“For now we are looking at the best four. We are expecting that we should get at least 40 bags per acre based on what we have seen so far,” said Wamalwa.

So far, Sh3 out of Sh7 billion has been spent with 2000 acres covered with crop. This varying from crops to be harvested next month to those recently planted.

In as much as the project seems to be taking face, the second crop planted on 500 acres failed to meet its expectations due to El – Nino rains.

“From the experts, they have informed us that they did not achieve what they set to achieve but what we have now, the third and final run is what will give us a clear picture of what has been achieved here,” confirmed the cabinet secretary.

The project that is being implemented by Green Arava of Israel and ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s state visit to Kenya in the week, Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa toured the project to inspect its progress.

So far, a generator has been put up along the Tana River where water from the river is filtered and is used for the irrigation process.

“The intention of the model farm was really to show the potential. We have shown that out of the shrubs of Galana, we can grow a beautiful crop, we can feed this nation,” he said.

The Galana Kulalu project is meant to provide food security in the country and to see Kenya stop importing 10 million bags of maize every year. At the same time, Kenya is implementing lessons learnt from Israel, which has remained food sufficient despite 80 percent of its land being on arid or semi arid land.

CS Wamalwa said that the project will not only look at the growth of maize but different varieties of crop as well. He however reassured maize farmers to continue growing their crop despite Galana falling in shape stating that Kenya’s food security will need them to continue playing their role.

The varieties of maize currently planted on the 2000 acres include punda milia, DKC, Duma 43, pH4 among others.
