Zimbabwe is projected to rank as Africa’s 14th largest economy in 2026, with a gross domestic product (GDP) of US$65.92 billion, as a recovery in agriculture and mining supports economic growth.

The country’s economy is forecast to expand by 5% in 2026, following improved agricultural output and stronger mining activity.

Despite the projected expansion, Zimbabwe’s growth rate is expected to remain below Tanzania’s, whose economy is forecast to grow by 5.9% in 2026.

The difference highlights the contrasting economic conditions and policy environments in the two countries, particularly in monetary management, investment and infrastructure development.

Agriculture and mining drive Zimbabwe’s recovery

Zimbabwe’s economic outlook has improved following a rebound in agricultural production and continued strength in the mining sector.

Favourable gold prices and stronger mining activity have helped sustain economic momentum, while improved agricultural output has supported recovery from the severe drought experienced in 2024.

Gold, platinum and lithium remain important contributors to export earnings, while agriculture plays a significant role in employment, food production and economic activity.

However, sustaining growth will depend on continued investment, stable economic policies and the ability to convert gains in key sectors into broader improvements in productivity and living standards.

Economic challenges remain

Zimbabwe continues to face longstanding challenges linked to external debt arrears, limited access to international capital markets and the need to strengthen confidence in its currency.

The country has been excluded from international capital markets and most official financing for more than 25 years amid debt and economic difficulties. Resolving external arrears and restoring debt sustainability remain central to efforts to improve access to financing.

Although recent conditions have improved, maintaining price stability and confidence in the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency remains important to the country’s economic outlook.

Controlling inflation, maintaining monetary discipline and strengthening public financial management will be important in sustaining economic stability and attracting investment.

Tanzania records stronger growth forecast

Tanzania’s economy is projected to grow by 5.9% in 2026, supported by activity in agriculture, mining, construction and tourism.

The country is also pursuing major energy and infrastructure investments intended to expand productive capacity and attract investment.

Tanzania is advancing plans for a major liquefied natural gas project involving international energy companies, a development that could strengthen its position in the regional energy sector.

The country’s growth outlook is supported by investment and economic activity across several sectors, although it remains exposed to external risks, including higher energy and fertiliser costs.

Outlook for Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s projected 5% growth in 2026 points to continued economic recovery, but the sustainability of that progress will depend on more than expansion in agriculture and mining.

Improving access to international finance, resolving debt arrears, maintaining currency stability and encouraging investment will be important to strengthening the economy over the longer term.

While the projected US$65.92 billion GDP would place Zimbabwe among Africa’s larger economies by nominal output, the ranking alone does not indicate how wealth is distributed or how much economic growth improves household incomes and living standards.

The comparison with Tanzania underscores the importance of stable monetary conditions, investment and diversification in supporting sustained economic growth.
