1. Concentrate on what’s good about you. You’re never going to be satisfied unless you know what you’re good at and focus a lot of your energy on it. If you want to be the best version of yourself, you have take the spark within you and ignite a fire. You might have to spend some time identifying what your spark is, but ultimately, you need to start cultivating your talents as soon as possible.

2. Work to eliminate what’s bad about you. Identify your flaws and work to correct the worst ones. You can start with the easier flaws, but you need to make progress toward your worst characteristics as well. This takes some time so just pick one thing and work on it for six months. At the end of the year you’ll have significantly diminished the two worst things about you.

3. Put others first. This doesn’t mean ignoring your own dreams, but try to focus on what other people need and want from you. Some examples include call your parents more often, volunteer on the weekends, meet up with your friend that’s experiencing problems, help your little cousin with his/her math homework, compliment people more often, etc. I myself am naturally a cold and competitive person but as soon as I started showing appreciation and consideration toward others I realized how much better life could be. There’s no way you can be the best possible version of yourself without recognizing that you are a social animal that finds fulfillment in helping others.

4. Inculcate healthy habits that you execute every day. This is extremely important. Find 2–3 habits that you’d like to implement and implement them EVERY DAY for an entire year. Do them regardless of whether you feel like doing them. Do them regardless whether or not you are “making progress” with them. Do them regardless of not “you have time” to do them. No excuses. Some examples of good habits include exercising, cleaning, meditating, reading, writing, showing gratitude, coming up with ideas, playing with your children, calling your parents, being totally honest, making dinner for your spouse, working on professional skills, learning a language, saving money, etc.

5. Be easy on yourself. If you’e trying to improve yourself you’re going to have many, many failures. That’s fine. Keep in mind, you’re probably already a good person. You don’t need a drill sergeant in your head that makes you feel terrible and inadequate. You need a loving parent in your head that accepts you for who you are but wants you to act in accordance with your best self.

6. Play more. Seriously. You won’t be happy at the end of your life if all you did was work yourself to the bones. I bet your happiest moments in life aren’t when you’re sitting behind your computer at 2:00 AM trying to finish something you didn’t want to do to begin with? Cultivate a strong sense of humor and try to be less uptight. The world we live in is extremely competitive and that’s probably the reason you’re seeking to improve yourself to begin with: so you “measure up” one way or the other. Life is about BALANCE not about going 100 miles per hour in one direction. I think you’ll find the more you play, the more you’ll realize you already have everything within you to be happy.
There’ s many, many other things you could do, but six is already probably too much. Wish you good luck friend!
