Call for calm on eve of Senegal's election run-off

    24/03 18:04 CET

Officials in Senegal have called for calm ahead of Sunday's presidential run-off as incumbent Abdoulaye Wade looks to extend his twelve-year rule. The elections commission urged the president and his rival, Macky Sall, not to declare victory early.

Tensions are running high in the former French colony amid anger over Wade's decision to sidestep a constitutional limit of two terms as head of state. Twelve former opposition candidates have called on voters to rally behind Sall, a former prime minister.

The 50-year-old picked up 26.6 percent of ballots cast in the first round to Wade's 30 percent.

If the opposition's call is heeded, it could force the 85-year-old from power.

Wade was hugely popular when he came to power, but rising food prices and the widespread belief that he is lining up his son Karim to succeed him has contributed to growing public anger.
