Security Tightened as Bunyoro Leadership Crisis Deepens

Security agencies have deployed personnel around Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom properties following intelligence that unidentified individuals were allegedly planning to attack Kingdom facilities.

The Kingdom said Sunday that it had received a security briefing about the alleged threat, prompting authorities to increase security around its installations.

“Following their assessment, the relevant security agencies have deployed personnel around the Kingdom’s properties as a precautionary measure to safeguard the Kingdom’s assets, officials, and the general public,” Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom said in a statement.

“We wish to assure the general public that all Kingdom offices remain open and accessible to the public and continue to operate normally,” the statement said.

The security deployment comes amid an increasingly public leadership dispute within Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, where questions over the administration of Kingdom affairs have intensified as Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I remains away from active public duties.

Okwiri Eng. Fred Mugenyi Rucunya has recently challenged the continued tenure of Prime Minister Andrew Kirungi Byakutaga, ordering him to leave office by October 15 and arguing that his mandate expired in 2023.

Byakutaga has continued carrying out official Kingdom duties, maintaining that he operates under the authority of the Omukama.

The Kingdom statement did not link the reported security threat to the leadership dispute.

Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom thanked security agencies for what it described as their “vigilance and commitment” and urged the public to continue accessing Kingdom offices normally.
