Scientist who masters the Queen`s language

"Although Professor Hoseah Kayumbo’s primary task is to teach Biology and related subjects at the University of Dar es Salaam, he and his colleagues have taken the added task of improving the quality of English writing skills of biology students they teach.
According to him, the standard of English of some of students joining the university is very poor. “Students cannot communicate effectively in English or Kiswahili when they first come to the University.
“In the first year we try to talk to them in simple English and help them with writing skills while they continue learning their chosen science subjects. This is particularly important to those taking Education and need a teaching subject like Biology.” The scientist adds: “It is encouraging to note the majority of students are able to pick up and master both Biology and English, and continue their studies through to the second year. As for their written Kiswahili, I suppose it gets worse because they start mixing it with English just like the rest of us in everyday life.”......."
