CNIO / “la Caixa” PhD Programme
In 2008 “la Caixa” Foundation launched a scholarship programme to offer interdisciplinary training and research opportunities to outstanding young graduate students of any nationality to pursue a PhD project at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO).

The “la Caixa”/CNIO international PhD programme offers cross-disciplinary training in state-of-the-art basic and applied cancer research within an international scientific environment. Ten fully funded four year fellowships will be available in 2010. Candidates should have an excellent academic track record, a solid knowledge of English and previous research experience.

Applications must be received by March 15th, 2010.

SWEEDEN

The Neurogenetics unit at Karolinska Institutet Alzheimer Disease Research Center of the Department of Neurobiology Care Sciences and Society and The Brain Bank at Karolinska Institutet (KI) are seeking a talented Postdoctoral Research Fellow to study the function of the Tau gene in the context of neurodegeneration with a main focus on tau-positive lesions associated with frontotemporal lobe dementias (FTD). The candidate will be involved in two primary projects using human brain samples (controls and FTD subjects) and animal models:

1. Standardized neuropathologic evaluations as well as validation of new antibodies markers/candidates for Tau mutation(s) in FTD

2. Genetic, genomic, proteinomic, and biochemical investigations.
The post-doc fellow will have the opportunity to participate in study design, acquire and analyze experimental data, present research results and publish them in a high impact factor peer-reviewed international journals.
Qualifications
To qualify, the applicant must hold a doctor’s degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the last date for applications should be given priority. Candidates who have completed their degree earlier than this should receive equal priority if special grounds exist.
Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defence is scheduled to take place within three months after the application deadline, in which case verification from the Dissertation Committee or equivalent body must be submitted with the application.
Candidates with Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. and relevant experience in human genetics, genomics, molecular biology techniques, particularly immunohistochemical techniques, and experience with mouse models are encouraged to apply. Prior experience in neuroanatomy and/or neuropathology is highly desirable. A track record of excellence should be evident in past publications and scholarly activities. Excellent problem solving, oral and written communication skills in English are mandatory. The research is highly collaborative and the applicant needs to possess the ability to interact in a multidisciplinary team.

Start date: 1 April 2010
The PhD student will elaborate the theoretical and practical design of the project, develop and conduct case studies, analyse data and publish papers in international scholarly journals; together, this will provide the basis for a PhD thesis, which is to be completed within four years. The PhD student will follow courses and participate in seminars and conferences. He or she will also assist senior faculty members in teaching courses and seminars at the BA and the MA level (max. 10% of the time).

Scholarship Description Australian Postgraduate Award Industry PhD Scholarships

Two Australian Postgraduate Industry Awards (APAIs), each worth $26,669 per annum (tax free) for three-years, are available for postgraduate research towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Successful applicants will conduct research to contribute to infrastructure development for integration of renewable and distributed power generation into electricity grid systems. One APAI will conduct research on power quality aspects related to the integration of renewable and distributed power generation, and the other will carry out research on network control and protection issues associated with the integration of renewable and distributed energy resources. Candidates with undergraduate honours (Class I or II(1)) or Masters degrees by research in electrical engineering with power engineering major are invited to apply.
