Towards Samia Suluhu's visit to Kenya, i have come across clips by SABC on the matter and discovered something unacceptable as far as reports with journalistic ethical standards are to go by.
When you listen to her reporting you hear bias coverage culminated with egoistic views pegged at strong nationalistic feelings as it is everything negative about Tanzania but positive about Kenya. It is just not possible such a dunderheaded journalist is a regional correspondent for SABC.
She talks of the following:
- One day chicks being burned in Tanzania but she disregards custom procedures that allow livestock to be cross-checked of diseases aside the existing law that asks for confiscation and destroyance of all illegal goods;
- She keeps on insisting that cattle being confiscated was unfair yet she disregard existing laws that prevent grazing on other country's territory and are specifically meant to avoid trans-boundary conflicts like the Pokots and karamajong between Kenya and Uganda, leave alone those laws to Protect World Heritage sites i.e. national parks and game reserves! Aside that, It is a well known fact cattle from Kenya have Rift Valley diseases a reason trans-boundary movement is not allowed without a veterinary pass;
- Moreover on an attempt to distort facts further, she claims Dairy products from Kenya being are prevented from accessing Tanzanian market while Tanzanian dairy products face the same but she deliberately chose to skip that part on her reportage. Here, the pending cases filed at the East African court can offer a proof on this;
- Maize from Tanzania being barred from entering Kenya on false accusations of aflatoxin. It has to be known existing studies name Kenya as the country most affected in the region with aflatoxin contamination in maize;
- Rice importation ban from Tanzania by Kenya over false claims of satandards and packaging
- Cooking gas from Tanzania being barred from entering Kenya in the pretext of only being cheap, a sought after relief to final consumers;
- High quality ceramic products from Tanzania being barred from entering Kenya;
- Glass products from Tanzania's Kioo Ltd being barred from entering Kenya;
This sort of shallow reportage that aims to character assasinate another nation should not allowed to disseminate, propagate and perpetuate unchecked by authorities in the GoT have an obligation counter such false coverages.
It would have been good if Tanzania spokesman Mr msigwa is more proactive to issue a letter of protest to SABC for one sided Kenyan view coverage on matters that involves two countries and from not offering a fair chance "to be heard" and hear from Tanzania's side on the accusations levelled at GoT.
Our attitude has to change and do away the tendency of leaving the accusations unanswered while GoT image is being tainted with smear attacks by crooked reporters from Kenya. Unless we are sitting comfortable while watching our country continue to be victimized at global stage, in this era of converegent views, the said tendency by respective authorities (Chief Spokesperson of the Government of the United Rep. of Tanzania) has to readjust ASAP for a better future country's rapproachment!
